Social Commerce
Social Commerce in Southeast Asia
Why social platforms have become a primary discovery and purchase surface in the region, and how to build a conversion path that survives the journey.

In short
Social commerce is buying and selling that takes place inside social platforms — through in-app storefronts, shoppable content, livestreams and creator affiliate links. In Southeast Asia it matters because product discovery frequently begins in a feed rather than a search box, and the purchase path is short enough that intent is not lost.
Discovery has moved into the feed
In several regional markets, consumers encounter products through creator content before they ever search for a category. That reverses the traditional funnel: demand is created in content, then captured by marketplace search shortly afterwards. Brands that measure only search-attributed sales tend to undervalue the content that created the demand.
The conversion path is where programmes fail
Content usually is not the bottleneck. The gap appears between the moment of interest and checkout: a slow product page, an out-of-stock variant, a mismatch between the offer in the video and the offer on the page, or a listing written for marketplace search rather than for someone who just watched a demonstration.
- Match the offer in content to the offer on the destination exactly.
- Rewrite listings for social-referred intent, not only for search keywords.
- Keep catalogue, price and stock synchronised across storefronts.
- Place proven creator content on the product page itself.
Market differences matter
Social commerce maturity is uneven. Live selling is a routine retail channel in Indonesia, chat commerce is part of the purchase path in Thailand, and Singapore behaves closer to a research-led market. A single regional playbook applied unchanged across six markets will underperform in most of them.
Common questions
- Does social commerce cannibalise marketplace sales?
- Usually it does not. In most regional categories social content creates demand that is often captured through marketplace search, which is why measurement should account for assisted paths rather than crediting only the last click.
